Intelius, Co-Founded by Naveen Jain, Provides a Year of Identity Theft Protection to 26.5 Million Veterans at Risk Due to Security Breach
On May 24, 2006, Intelius announced that it would offer its proactive identity theft prevention service, IDWatch, to the 26.5 million veterans whose identities could be stolen using the personal information taken in a burglary of a laptop belonging to the Department of Veteran Affairs. The year’s worth of protection, with a typical fee of just under $100, will be available to veterans for $19.95. This rate represents an 80% discount.
Chairman of the Board for Intelius, Admiral Bill Owens, expressed the following sentiment: “It is unsettling to learn that millions of our Armed Forces veterans’ identities may be at increased risk of identity theft.” Intelius has dedicated years to developing the technology needed for identity theft monitoring to mitigate the risk of identity theft before, during, and after situations such as the security breach at the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Former US Air Force Captain Jack Dein concurs – “Intelius offering such a deep discount on IDWatch is a much-needed show of support for millions of Armed Forces veterans in light of the recent events. By signing up for this service, I have regained peace of mind about my identity, and I’ll sleep better tonight.”
“When the news broke Monday regarding the possibility that 26.5 million US veterans were at risk for identity theft, our immediate reaction was to find a way to help,” stated Naveen Jain, CEO of Intelius. Intelius extended its services to the Department of Veteran Affairs and made arrangements to offer its IDWatch product at a discount to those affected. Intelius has expressed both pride in those serving in the military and as hope that such a gesture would provide peace of mind to those concerned about identity theft, given the circumstances.
A group of visionaries from InfoSpace and Microsoft began Intelius in 2003 to empower customers with information for intelligent decision-making. This group included Intelius CEO Naveen Jain. IDWatch, one of Intelius’ award-winning services, monitors customers’ personal, professional, and financial data. It also provides real-time alerts to potentially fraudulent activity via email. Customers also receive an identity report, consisting of information from public records, commercial records, and credit reports. A change to any of the aforementioned information serves as an early signal of identity theft, and the customer receives prompt email notification. Additionally, IDWatch monitors the black market and online forums for the sale, trade, or use of customers’ identity–related information, and alerts customers if such information appears in these venues. Should someone attempt to sell identity-related information, the alerts will be very useful to those affected by the recent breach.
